Our Name

Emmaus Road comes from an Easter story found in the Bible in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 24:13-35). It is the story of two disciples who left Jerusalem, discouraged and confused, after the crucifixion of Jesus. During the journey, Jesus joins them and offers them hope, as he shares conversation and interprets scripture. Although they do not recognize Jesus, they know something is happening because later they ask each other "Didn't our hearts burn within us?"

At a point along the way, the disciples invite Jesus to stay with them and they share fellowship and a meal. It is in the breaking of the bread that the disciples recognize Jesus.

Recognizing the presence of Jesus changes their lives. They are no longer afraid, discouraged or confused and they run back to Jerusalem to share the news with the other disciples.

We walk that same Emmaus Road in our own faith journeys; as with those first disciples, we walk it together, sharing life with those who accompany us along the way. And, as we walk, Jesus Christ walks alongside of us. Even when we forget, still he is there. Even when we do not recognize him, he is still there. In the midst of the loving, caring and sharing of relationships, we experience our Risen Lord; and, in that experience, we are renewed and encouraged and filled with joy! Once we have experienced Jesus’ presence in our lives, our lives are changed and we want to share the joy we feel with others.

We invite all who wish to experience the joy of being a disciple to join us. Sharing life with others and serving in this world is what we were created to do. In our relationships with God and each other, we experience the joy of a life that is filled with meaning.

Even if you are not sure where you are in your spiritual journey, we welcome you to come and share the journey with us. Following Jesus, trying to be like him in this world, sets us apart from the world and helps us not to be trapped by the call of materialism that results in a dead end road. Join us and journey with us along Emmaus Road where we reach out to strangers and experience life in a new and joy-filled way.
